Hunger Shouldn't Be an Option
Skipping dinner. Eating less – or eating less well. Giving up food in order to pay rent. This is what thousands of people in San Francisco and Marin face every day.
The San Francisco Food Bank is the critical link between food and people. The Food Bank provides food to over 22,000 households each week through 400+ non-profit partners.
Hunger impacts people in all walks of life. The San Francisco Food Bank reaches them all – from working families to senior citizens. Together, we will distribute 36.5 million pounds of food this year to meet an ever-growing need in our community.
Nourishing lives and strengthening communities in San Francisco and Marin
We source food from over 500 growers, packers, manufacturers, grocers and the USDA.
More than 15,000 volunteers come into our 55,000 sq. ft. warehouse throughout the year to sort and repack food, readying it for distribution.
400+ community partners receive food from the San Francisco Food Bank through deliveries and by “shopping” at our warehouse for selected items.
We operate 200+ neighborhood pantries in San Francisco and Marin, where our clients can select groceries and fresh produce at farmers’ market-style distributions.
We maximize our resources and advocate against hunger nationally through our membership in Feeding America, the nation’s food bank network.
Food drives held year-round provide an important source of food variety.
Hunger touches 150,000 people in the City
In San Francisco: 1 in 4 seniors, 1 in 4 children and 1 in 5 adults cannot count on the daily meals they need to lead healthy, productive lives
In Marin: Over 28,500 people struggle with hunger in one of the nation’s wealthiest counties.
Healthy groceries for balanced meals
33.5 million pounds of food distributed in 2008 - 2009: enough food for 70,000 meals a day.
50 percent of the food we distribute is fresh produce.
22,000 households served every week.
60 percent of our pantry clients live in homes with at least one working adult.
We bring nutritious food to diverse communities
Children and Working Families: We fight child hunger by working directly with public schools and community agencies. Our 60+ Healthy Children’s Pantries ensure that children and their families have access to nutritious food right where they live and learn.
Seniors: In addition to being served through our neighborhood pantry network, over 9,600 seniors receive a monthly box of food through our USDA Commodity Supplemental Food Program.
Immigrants: We provide culturally appropriate food to immigrants in need through our Immigrant Food Assistance Program.
Residents of public housing: Many public housing developments are either geographically isolated, lack full-service grocers or both. By working with tenants’ associations, we bring food into these underserved communities.
People fighting hardship: Staying nourished is a vital building block in conquering addiction or chronic homelessness. We provide food to supportive housing associations and large meal programs such as Glide, Project Open Hand and St. Anthony’s Dining Room to help people transform their lives. We also participate in Project Homeless Connect.
People in crisis: Any number of misfortunes can drive people to suddenly need food aid. We provide a three-day box of emergency food to ease the burden of hunger.
$1 donated = $9 in food distributed
For every $1 you donate, the Food Bank will distribute $9 worth of food to those in need. The Food Bank invests your gift effectively and efficiently:  97 percent  of your donation goes right back into the community in the form of daily nourishment.
